An electric boat you can spec and buy like a sneaker.

Voltari builds high performance electric boats. They needed a storefront and configurator that could sell a six figure product online without feeling like a brochure. We designed and built it on Shopify.

How it was built

The process, start to finish.

01Brief

Understand what a boat buyer actually needs to see.

A six figure purchase does not convert like a t-shirt. Buyers research for weeks, compare specs, and want to feel the product before they ever talk to a human. The brief: make the boat explorable online, capture serious buyers, and keep the brand as premium as the hardware.

  • Stakeholder sessions with the Voltari team on models, options and the sales handoff
  • Reference review of automotive configurators, not other boat sites
  • Agreed scope and fixed quote before any design work started
02Audit

Map what Shopify can and cannot do for this product.

Shopify is built for carts, not configurators. Before designing anything we prototyped the hard part: how model, colour and option choices combine into a real, priceable build that Shopify checkout can process. That decided the architecture, not the other way around.

  • Technical spike on variant limits, pricing logic and checkout handoff
  • Content model for models, options and media in the CMS so Voltari can edit without a developer
  • Risk list shared with the client before build, with the workaround for each item
03Design

Design the boat as the interface.

Large imagery, minimal chrome, spec data where a buyer expects it. The configurator walks the buyer through choices in the order a salesperson would, and every state is shareable so a buyer can send their build to a partner or a dealer.

  • Storefront and configurator flows designed and reviewed with Voltari at each step
  • Responsive first: the buying research happens on phones, the deciding happens on desktops
04Build

Custom theme, custom configurator, no fragile apps.

Built as a custom Shopify theme with the configurator as first party code, not a bolted on app subscription that breaks on the next platform update. Everything Voltari needs to change day to day lives in the CMS.

  • Custom theme built from zero to match the design exactly
  • First party configurator wired into Shopify products and checkout
  • Weekly builds on a staging URL, so the client watched it come together live
05Launch

Ship, measure, hand over.

Launch is a checklist, not an event: redirects, analytics, speed pass, content freeze, then go. After launch Voltari got a recorded walkthrough of the CMS and the configurator admin, so the site is theirs, not ours.

  • Speed and QA pass across devices before DNS switch
  • Analytics wired so every configurator step is measurable
  • Documentation and training handed over with the keys
06Result

A storefront that sells the boat before the call.

Voltari's sales conversations now start with a buyer who has already built their boat. And the client's own words are the result we care about most: awarded best in customer experience online in December 2025 for their web presence, and in their review they wrote "This is what Blinc gets you!"
